Botanical Name: Arachis hypogaea Linnaeus
Peanuts - a four-leaf bean with yellow sitting flowers and underground fruits, originally from South America. It originated between southern Bolivia and northern Argentina, from where it spread throughout the New World when Spanish researchers discovered its versatility. Today, farmers in Asia and Africa also grow it.
The main use of peanuts as a source of edible oil, but the high content of oil and protein also makes it an important food crop.
